WHEEL LOCKS

Introduction

Yeah yeah, we all know the baloney about "If a thief want's something he'll get it."

If you really believe that, then just stop locking your car and leave the key fob on the dash. But if you have some common sense and would like to make things at least a bit inconvenient for the theives, then put some locks on your wheels. Here's what you get:

McGard locks

There are 4 locking lug nuts, you only need one locking lug to be put on each wheel. You use your stock nuts in all the other positions except for one.

The piece in the center is the "key". You'll see that you cannot turn the locking nuts without the special key.

Which one do I buy?

I wrote to McGard and they recommend part #24137 for the C6 Corvette. I had spoken to other drivers who had used #24157 and told me they fit. Both part numbers have the same thread size and diameter, but the 24157 is a shorter lock and can bottom out on the wheel stud of some vehicles. This could result in damage to the lock, rendering it difficult to remove and possibly causing wheel stud damage.

The bottom line: make sure you get the McGard #24137 for sure.

Comparison and photos

comparison view Here's the comparison of the two locks side by side. You can see the correct lock for the C6 is the #24137, which is truly longer than the #24157, so it won't bottom out and hurt your wheel studs.

Yep, identical thread size and diameter.
They are both designated as "M12 x 1.5". That means that the internal diameter of the threads is 12 mm. The threads are each spaced 1.5 mm apart, so that there will be 6.67 threads per centimeter. That's what they call the "pitch" of the threads. The "1.5" pitch is considered a "fine pitch" for this size of bolt or nut, a more standard or "coarse pitch" would be 1.75 mm per thread.

These lug nuts by McGard, #24137, will require a 3/4" hex socket wrench. That's really very close to a 19mm (3/4" = 19.05mm) so a 19 mm socket works just fine. Hopefully you have a nice socket and a torque wrench to make sure you get the proper tightness : 100 ft-lbs.

view of key

Here's a picture of the key. You can see the unique star pattern, which will onlyl fit your 4 lug nuts. If you lose the key, you'll have to have your key code number to get another key made.

This star pattern locks into each of your 4 lugs. The opposite end (not visible here) is a 13/16 hex if you chose the #24157 nuts. This is a size found on any standard lug wrench. But this is a different size from the wrench you need for the stock C6 lug nuts, which are 19 mm (or 3/4"). So this is another reason NOT to use #24157.

In contrast, the #24137 uses a 3/4" (19mm) hex head wrench for the key. This is the same as you would need for the stock nuts on the C6, so you will not have to get an extra hex socket.

all keys are different

Though it may appear that all these locks are the same, take a really close look at these two. These are from two different sets of locking lugs. The star pattern in fact is totally different. Rest assured, your own locking lugs have a unique pattern, and a unique registration number.

Be sure to register the number with McGard as soon as you get them. This is the only way for you to get a replacement key if you lose your original key.

locks installed Here's how the locking lugs look on the C6. You can't tell them from the stock lugs, so they do not detract from the appearance of the car.

Look closely. At 4 O'Clock you can see the single locking lug on this wheel. You only need to put one locking lug on each wheel. Store your key code number safely, and store the key safely also --- it's next to impossible to get this lug off without the key. Also, don't forget to use a torque wrench when tightening all lugs -- 100 ft-lbs of torque on each one.
